10 Reasons Small Businesses Put Off Booking A Brand Photoshoot

(and how I can help make the process feel simple and supportive)

Booking a brand photoshoot is a really positive step for any small business. Professional images help you show up more confidently, communicate your values, and attract the right clients.

That said, many people dread the whole process which is why they put it off.  It is completely normal to feel unsure, nervous, or even overwhelmed by the thought of a brand shoot.  Brand photography is personal, and for small businesses, it often involves putting yourself at the centre of your work.

Here are ten challenges I see time and time again, and why thoughtful planning and guidance make such a difference.

1. Not Knowing What Images Will Be Most Useful

Most people know they need photos to show up for and in their business, but they aren’t always sure what to ask for.

Questions around how many images are needed, what types of shots will be useful, and how photography fits into their wider marketing can make the whole thought of booking a photoshoot feel too daunting and it’s so easy to put it on the back burner and ignore it.

This is why I focus on understanding how you plan to use your images before we even pick up a camera.  Website and social channels are the most common uses, but consider newsletters, blogs, networking, public speaking events and advertising.  Once I know where you want to use your images, then we can work out together, what images will be the most useful for you.

2. Feeling Nervous About Being Photographed

Literally 99% of my clients tell me they’re not comfortable in front of the camera.  In fact, they tell me how much they HATE having their photo taken.

They may have memories of awful school photos from childhood!  Or maybe they have had a bad headshot experience in the past where they felt rushed or unsupported and the resulting pictures were disappointing.  I know lots of people worry about looking awkward, stiff, or not like themselves.

I come across this much than those who walk in looking forward to the experience!  Because I know this, I work at a VERY calm pace, providing gentle, clear direction and allowing time and space to relax into a shoot.  This makes such a huge difference — you don’t need to be confident in front of a camera to get natural, flattering images.  You just need a calm, understanding photographer who gives you the time you need!

3. Finding the Time to Plan Everything

Running a business already takes up a lot of head space. Adding ‘planning a photoshoot’ to the mix can feel like one too many things to manage.

Outfits, locations, props, schedules — it adds up quickly.

But rather than making it another source of stress, I work with my clients to chat through all their ideas well in advance of any shoot.  I have a pre-shoot questionnaire which helps to clarify any disorganised thoughts.  And I arrange a zoom consultation so we can properly discuss exactly what they are hoping to achieve.

A structured and gentle approach means that, together, we can plan and schedule a brand photoshoot that not only captures all the imagery they need, but they might almost look forward to, and definitely enjoy on the day!

“Georgina is an absolutely wonderful photographer. In addition to her technical skill, she is a delight to work with. She made us feel totally at ease and was a real pro in guiding us through the process so that she could capture exactly the moments and images we wanted. I shared my thoughts with Georgina about the style I liked, and she produced exactly what I was looking for.

A really great experience – thank you!”

4. Uncertainty Around Clothing Choices

What you wear has a big impact on how your images feel, but this part often causes worry.

Clients regularly ask:

  • What colours work best?
  • How many outfits do I need?
  • Should I dress formally or casually?

I provide a full Preparation Guide in advance of any shoot which, along with the pre-shoot zoom consultation, helps my clients to get a real sense of what their images are going to say, what the brand values are and the type of customer or clients they are hoping to appeal to.  It’s important to present your authentic self, so the aim isn’t to dress up as someone else, but to choose clothing that feels comfortable, confident, and aligned with your brand.

5. Worry That the Images Won’t Reflect Their Brand

Small businesses don’t want generic photography.  They could easily go to a stock library for that!

They want images that reflect their personality, values, and the way they work with clients. But, having seen stock (and now AI) imagery across the internet, there’s often a fear that the photos could look polished but disconnected.

This is why I take the time to fully understand your business and your brand before the shoot.  We’ll plan locations, props and people that reflect your brand intentionally, professionally and, most importantly, authentically.

6. The Investment Feels Significant

Brand photography is an investment, and it’s completely understandable to want to think it through carefully before committing. For many small businesses, it can feel like a significant step, especially when budgets need to be spent wisely. Clients often want reassurance that the experience will be worth it and that the images will have real value beyond the day of the shoot. Clients often want to know:

  • Will these photos still feel relevant in a year’s time?
  • Will they support my business as it grows and evolves?
  • Will I actually feel confident using them across my website, social media, and marketing?

That’s why thoughtful planning is so important. Creating a gallery with longevity and versatility in mind ensures your images remain useful, purposeful, and a worthwhile investment.

7. Not Knowing How to Use the Images Afterwards

Is not knowing how or why you would use your images one of the reasons you’ve been putting off booking a brand photoshoot? This is exactly why thoughtful, clear planning is built into every brand shoot I offer. Some clients come to me knowing precisely what they need and where their images will be used — and that’s great.

Others simply know they need updated photography, but aren’t sure of the detail yet. Together, we’ll work out what images will best tell your brand story and where they’ll work hardest for your business. Whether you’re updating or launching a website, keeping your social media refreshed, creating marketing materials, or preparing to launch a new product or service, we’ll create a plan that makes using your images feel simple and natural.

8. Fear of Looking “Too Posed” or Not Like Themselves

Authenticity matters, particularly for service-based businesses where trust and connection are at the heart of what you do.

Many clients worry their photos will feel staged, overly polished, or simply not like them. The aim of a brand photoshoot is never to change how you come across or ask you to perform, but to capture you in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and recognisable to the people who already know you. Creating this kind of imagery relies on a comfortable environment and gentle, supportive direction rather than rigid posing. When you feel at ease, your expressions, body language, and personality come through without effort.

These natural moments help create images that feel genuine and approachable, allowing potential clients to connect with you before you’ve even had a conversation.

9. Managing the Practical Details

Locations, lighting, weather, and image usage are just some of the practical details that go into planning a successful brand photoshoot. When these elements aren’t clearly explained, it’s easy for the process to feel confusing or overwhelming, particularly if this is your first time booking professional photography.

Many clients aren’t sure what to expect, what decisions they need to make, or how flexible the plan can be if something changes on the day. Clear communication and thoughtful planning help remove that uncertainty.

By talking through options in advance and having a clear structure in place, you’re free to focus on the experience rather than the logistics. Knowing what’s been considered and planned allows the shoot itself to feel calm, organised, and enjoyable, rather than something you need to manage.

10. Fear of Making the Wrong Choice

At its core, many concerns come down to one thing: not wanting to get it wrong.

Choosing a photographer, investing your time and money, and putting your business in front of the camera can feel like a big step. That’s why I always take the time to get to know you and your business before the shoot.

Every brand is different, and understanding what matters to you helps ensure your images feel authentic and purposeful. I also arrange a Zoom call so you can ask questions, get a feel for how I work, and confirm that I’m the right photographer for you.

My photoshoots are never rushed — they’re designed to feel relaxed, supportive, and enjoyable. We’ll take things at a comfortable pace, and ideally share plenty of laughter along the way.

Final Thoughts

I am in no doubt that a brand photoshoot should feel supportive, (hopefully) fun and not overwhelming or stressful.

With the right preparation and a photographer who understands your business, the experience should be calm, enjoyable, and genuinely useful — leaving you with images that feel like you and support your business long after the shoot.
