A Day in the Wild
The British Wildlife Centre: Up Close with Britain’s Most Enchanting Creatures
On a bright but chilly January day, I had the pleasure of visiting the British Wildlife Centre, a haven for some of the UK’s most fascinating native species. During the winter, the centre is closed during the week, allowing them to run special photography days where exclusive access to the animal enclosures is granted to photography and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
Despite the crisp air, the sun cast a golden glow over the enclosures, making for a perfect day to observe and appreciate Britain’s wildlife up close.
One of the highlights of my visit was spending time with the red squirrels. Watching these agile, fiery-furred creatures scurry about, their bushy tails flicking as they leapt from branch to branch, was truly delightful. Their inquisitive nature and boundless energy made them an absolute joy to observe.
Another unforgettable encounter was with an adorable dormouse. It would be next to impossible to photograph a dormouse in the wild, or even in their enclosure at the centre, so under very careful supervision, a single dormouse was brought out to us and obligingly posed on various foliage for us to capture! Seeing this tiny, golden creature clambering about on the smallest of twigs was heart-melting. It was fascinating to learn about their hibernation habits and the conservation efforts in place to protect their dwindling populations.
Next we met Basil, one of the foxes at the British Wildlife Centre. He was nothing short of majestic, with his sleek coat and piercing eyes! He exuded a quiet confidence as he moved about his enclosure, sniffing out treats the keepers put out. We were able to get incredibly close, offering a perfect moment to admire his beauty and intelligence.
Then there were the otters—playful, mischievous, and full of character. Watching them chase each other, splash in the water, and nibble on their snacks was a highlight of the day. Their sheer joy and energy were infectious, leaving me grinning from ear to ear.
Perhaps the most unexpected entertainment came from the weasels. These tiny, frenetic creatures darted around with an almost comical intensity, never staying still for long. Their antics made for some hilarious moments, and it was a HUGE challenge to capture any thing in focus!!
Finally, I spent time with the gentle polecats, creatures I had never seen up close before. Their soft fur and calm demeanor made them stand out amongst the more energetic animals, and I found myself fascinated by their quiet charm.
Overall, my visit to the British Wildlife Centre was an absolute delight. It was a huge privilege being able to see these animals up close, learn about their behaviours, and appreciate the conservation work being done. It was a day well spent, and I left with a newfound appreciation for Britain’s incredible native wildlife – and a host of photographs to look back on.
