10 Creative ways to celebrate turning 50

How to Celebrate Your 50th

There’s a point in life when birthdays feel enormous. Once upon a time it was all noisy 18ths and sparkly 21sts. Then, without much warning, the same friends were hosting 30ths and everyone was pretending they weren’t slightly alarmed about leaving their twenties behind.

Blink again and it’s 40. After a blur of careers, weddings, perhaps children, school runs and life generally picking up speed, you find yourself holding another invitation and thinking, surely that can’t be right. But 40 still feels manageable. Still young enough. Still not quite “serious”.

Time Flies

And then, almost overnight, 50 appears on the horizon.

Half a century. It sounds dramatic when you say it out loud. A proper milestone. The sort that makes you pause and take stock of where you’ve been and where you’re headed next.

I’ve found myself thinking about my own not-too-distant big 5.0 and what it might mean. Less in a panic, more in a reflective, slightly incredulous way. How did we get here already?

Let’s Celebrate

If you’re approaching 50 and wondering how on earth to mark it, you’re in good company.  I think it deserves more than a quiet dinner (unless that’s genuinely your thing1). It deserves intention!

So I’ve pulled together a top ten list of brilliant ways to celebrate a milestone birthday. It doesn’t have to be 50. Any significant year will do. Think of it as a little nudge towards celebrating in a way that actually feels like you.

Quiet Pampering Ideas

1.  Champagne Tea

If you’re leaning towards something refined and quietly indulgent, a proper afternoon tea is hard to beat. There’s something instantly celebratory about a tiered stand arriving at the table, stacked with delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones with jam and cream, and perfectly crafted little cakes.

It feels grown-up in the best possible way. You can take your time, chat properly and savour each bite rather than rushing through a busy evening. Add a pot of good tea poured into china cups, or upgrade the occasion with a glass of something chilled and sparkling, and it becomes a lovely way to mark turning 50.

Elegant, relaxed and just indulgent enough to feel special without being over the top.

Two great afternoon tea locations near Tunbridge Wells are Salomons or One Warwick Park

2.  Spa Weekend

If what you actually, really want is to switch off completely, a spa weekend is an excellent choice. A night or two away from everyday life, with no responsibilities and no rushing about, can feel like the ultimate gift to yourself.

Book in for a treatment you’ve always fancied, whether that’s a massage, facial or something a little indulgent. Drift between the pool, sauna and steam room at your own pace. Pad around in a fluffy dressing gown and slippers, tea in hand, feeling gloriously unhurried. It’s calm, restorative and quietly luxurious. Turning 50 is the perfect excuse to prioritise yourself for once.

Two really lovely spots for a spa getaway near Tunbridge Wells are The Ashdown Park Hotel or The Spa Hotel.

3.  Wine Tasting Experiences

With so many vineyards and distilleries across Kent and East Sussex, we’re genuinely spoilt for choice when it comes to brilliant local wines and spirits. The countryside alone makes it worth the trip, rolling hills, neat rows of vines and those wide open skies that make everything feel a little more special.

Why not turn your 50th into an experience and book a wine tasting or cocktail-making session? Learn how it’s made, sample a few varieties and enjoy the stories behind each bottle. It’s sociable without being hectic, celebratory without being over the top, and a lovely way to toast a milestone in beautiful surroundings.

For The Adventurer In You

4.  Go Ape

Maybe total relaxation isn’t your style at all. If you’d rather feel your heart racing than drift around a spa, an adrenaline-fuelled adventure could be exactly the way to mark 50. Head up into the treetops and see the world from a completely different angle.

Take on a multi-course aerial challenge, navigating rope bridges, wobbly crossings and high platforms before finishing with a long, exhilarating zip line back down to earth. It’s energetic, slightly nerve-wracking and undeniably good fun. Yes, it’s a bit daunting if heights aren’t your favourite thing, but that’s half the point. A milestone birthday is the perfect excuse to be brave.

You can find Go Ape at Bedgebury Pinetum.

5.  Aqua Park

If you’re still firmly in the thrill-seeker camp but would rather keep your feet closer to the ground, an aqua park session could be just the thing. The inflatable course at Bewl Reservoir is brilliant for unleashing your competitive streak without needing a head for heights.

Pull on a wetsuit, brace yourself for slightly chilly water, and prepare for plenty of slipping, sliding and laughing at each other’s spectacular wipe-outs. There’s something very freeing about bouncing across giant inflatables and not taking yourself too seriously. It’s energetic, a bit chaotic and hugely entertaining. A perfect way to celebrate 50 with a splash and a proper dose of fun.

The nearest Aqua Park to Tunbridge Wells is at Bewl Reservoir.

6.  Paddleboarding

Equally memorable, though far more tranquil, is simply messing about on the water. Swap high-speed thrills for a gentle paddle along the rivers, canals or coastline of Kent and East Sussex and let the pace slow right down. There’s something wonderfully grounding about being out on the water, listening to birdsong and the steady dip of a paddle.

Make it extra special with a sunset outing, when the light softens and everything feels a little magical. Or plan a two-hour paddle followed by breakfast or lunch at Bodiam Boating Station. It’s active without being frantic, peaceful without being dull, and a lovely way to mark a milestone.

My site of choice is the lovely Bodiam Boating Station which is based on the River Rother at Northiam.

Celebrating With The Family

7.  Glamping Weekend

A wonderful way to celebrate turning 50 is to retreat to the countryside for a weekend of glamping in Kent or East Sussex. Think rolling fields, fresh air and slower mornings, but without the faff of pitching tents or wrestling with airbeds that refuse to cooperate.

You still get the back-to-nature feel – evenings around a fire pit, long chats under big skies, maybe a countryside walk before breakfast – but with proper beds, cosy interiors and a few home comforts thrown in. It’s relaxed, intimate and a world away from everyday routines. A lovely opportunity to gather your favourite people and simply enjoy being together.

Carocol Camping is in Groombridge or Kits Coty Glamping you can find near Aylesbury.

8.  Chocolate Making

An idea that tends to delight both the younger members of the family and the slightly older ones is a chocolate-making workshop. It’s hands-on, a little bit indulgent and guaranteed to raise a smile.

You could opt for a general chocolate workshop, learning how to temper, mould and decorate your own creations. Or go all in with a truffle-making session, rolling, dipping and dusting your way through a couple of gloriously messy hours. There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about working with chocolate, and even better about tasting the results. It’s relaxed, interactive and a sweet way to celebrate a milestone together.

Temper Temper is based in Southborough.

9.  The view from above…

Head up to London or down to Brighton and see things from a completely different vantage point. In London, you can spend a memorable half hour rising 135 metres above the River Thames, taking in sweeping 360-degree views across the capital’s skyline. It’s calm, surprisingly serene, and a wonderful way to appreciate just how vast and varied the city really is.

On the coast, step aboard the British Airways i360 and glide gently upwards in the glass viewing pod. Enjoy a drink from the onboard bar as you gaze out across the Channel, soaking up that big-sky seaside feeling.

The London Eye is on the south bank in central London or you can find the Brighton i360 on the seafront in Brighton.

10.  Make some special memories; a family photoshoot – with me!

And finally, perhaps the most meaningful way to mark 50 is to capture it properly. A family photoshoot isn’t just about smiling at a camera; it’s about pressing pause for a moment and recording this chapter exactly as it is.

When you have children, time has a habit of racing ahead. One minute they’re tiny, the next they’re towering over you and borrowing your shoes. It’s all too easy to realise that the only recent photo of everyone together is a hurried selfie with someone blinking or half out of frame.

Booking a relaxed, enjoyable photoshoot means beautiful, timeless images you’ll genuinely treasure for years to come.
