SPOTLIGHT ON…

DBSJ

Your Kent Brand Photographer

DBSJ is an award winning interiors fit-out contractor for the office, retail, and hospitality sectors. Their in-house integrated approach sets them apart; they have the ability to deliver an end-to-end service that meets the full build requirements. This is possible due to their extensive production and admin operations centred around their manufacturing workshops, finishing studio, and management offices at Bramling Workshops, near Canterbury.

The Brief

DBSJ, along with their sister company, Denne Joinery, recently underwent a significant expansion and a complete brand redesign. As part of this transformation, they recognized the need for cohesive and professional imagery across their websites and marketing materials. Their existing visuals lacked consistency and did not align with their refreshed brand identity.

To address this, they brought me in for a series of three photography sessions to capture a comprehensive set of updated images. This included professional studio headshots for the entire team, ensuring a unified and polished look. Additionally, I photographed various aspects of their business environment, including the workshop, meeting rooms, interiors, exteriors, and other key spaces. The goal was to authentically represent their rebrand with high-quality visuals that not only showcase their professionalism but also reinforce their brand identity across all platforms.

The Challenge

One of the key challenges for this series of three shoots with DBSJ was efficiently managing the extensive shot list while maintaining high-quality results. With a clear vision in mind, DBSJ had a well-defined list of images they needed, making it essential to adhere to a structured schedule to ensure everything was captured within the allocated time.

The headshot sessions were particularly time-sensitive, as they involved dozens of team members, each with only a five-minute slot. This required the ability to quickly establish rapport with each individual, helping them feel at ease in front of the camera.

In the workshop environment, safety was a top priority. With heavy-duty industrial machinery in operation and multiple trip hazards present, I took extra care to follow all health and safety guidelines, ensuring that both the shoot and the working environment remained safe for everyone involved.

Another key consideration was maintaining visual consistency across all three sessions. Given that my visits took place at different times of the day and during different seasons, I had to adapt to varying lighting conditions while ensuring that the final set of images remained cohesive and on-brand. This required careful planning, controlled lighting where possible, and an adaptive approach to each setting to create a seamless collection of images that effectively represented DBSJ’s rebrand.

 The Solution

During our pre-shoot consultations for each session, I worked closely with DBSJ to establish precise shot lists and a well-structured schedule. This level of planning was essential in ensuring an efficient and productive workflow, allowing us to maximize our time on-site while capturing every required image.

Upon arrival, I prioritized setting up my mobile headshot studio to photograph the team first. This ensured that we maintained a smooth flow of people through the session while achieving professional and consistent portraits. Once the headshots were complete, I transitioned into the workshop, systematically working through each area to capture a mix of close-up detail shots and wide-angle images that highlighted the scale, craftsmanship, and expertise within the workspace.

One of the sessions also included a request to photograph DBSJ’s newly branded vans. However, the unpredictable British weather posed a challenge, with persistent rain threatening to impact the shoot. Adapting to the conditions required a flexible approach, making use of dry intervals to capture the vans in the best possible light while ensuring the final images remained polished and on-brand.

The company’s expansive premises in Bramling provided a wealth of diverse settings, each offering unique photographic opportunities. From the spray shop and visualisation room to the various workstations within the workshop, every space contributed to a comprehensive portfolio of images. These varied backdrops allowed us to create a rich and dynamic collection of visuals, ensuring DBSJ has a strong suite of professional imagery to showcase their rebrand across multiple platforms with authenticity and impact.

What did DBSJ have to say?

“Georgina was incredible; she captured the essence of the business perfectly and was great getting all members of the team to engage with her, resulting in fantastic images.

The turnaround from shoot to final edit was very quick and we are thrilled with the results.

Thank you very much Georgina, we look forward to working with you in the future.”
