FIVE questions to ask before hiring a photographer

On the blog today I am looking at the questions to ask before hiring a photographer.

1. Will it hurt? 🤣

It sounds silly, but genuinely, every photographer has a very different style of shooting.  So it’s important that you make sure you’ve chosen a photographer who you will be comfortable with during your shoot.  Whether you want photographs that are formally posed, specifically styled, recorded in a documentary style, or a mixture of a few, talk to your photographer to find out how they go about their shoots and ensure it fits in with what you are looking for.  I have discovered over the years that a mixture of posed shots and natural moments are what my clients like the most.  The images they order to display on their walls are often the more posed family group shots!

2. What if my kids don’t behave?

I know this is a genuine concern for a lot of my clients.  We all know our little darlings have their moments!  For me, it’s extremely important that my clients enjoy their photoshoot experience.  Therefore, I am keen to reassure them that, actually, it doesn’t matter if the kids aren’t playing ball on the day of the shoot!

“Georgina has a high level of expertise and suggested a great location for a photo shoot. She got some brilliant photos despite having to deal with two very grumpy little ones on the day. She has a clear passion for making sure that she delivers a high quality product. We would definitely use her again.”

3. What should we wear?

One of the most common questions I am asked is “What should we wear?”.  And understandably too, because you are going to be capturing memories that you’ll want to display around your home for years to come.  So it is important that you all look your best!

“We are thrilled with our photos from our Autumn mini-shoot with Georgina, everything was well considered and properly planned – location/ props/ outfit suggestions/ poses etc and it shows in the quality of the photos. Thank you so much!”

Make sure you ask your photographer to give you some hints, tips and pointers on what to wear for your photography session.  I have a page on my website where I direct clients to visit well in advance of their sessions.  This has some great ideas and inspriation for seasonal clothing suggestions based on the time of year when their photo shoot is taking place.  And I also have some seasonal pinterest boards which have some useful Spring, Summer & Autumn colour inspiration!

4. What if it rains or is really windy?

If you have booked an outdoor family photo shoot, then this is an important question to ask!  Obviously, if the session is date dependant because of a family meet up or an event and the event is going ahead, then so will the photography!  But if the session you have booked is for a lovely, outdoor family photography shoot and the weather forecast looks really wet or windy, then of course we will reschedule!

Having said that, toddlers, puddles and wellies….😍

5. Are you the right photographer for me?

Have you had a good look at  my portfolio of family images?  If you’ve had a look a like what you see, that’s a good start, but it’s not everything!  It’s a really good idea to have a chat with your photographer before you meet, so wherever possible, I will arrange a pre-shoot telephone chat so I can get a better idea of you as a family and more importantly, you can get a better idea of me as a photographer!  I pride myself on being friendly and approachable – and not just for the adults; I’ve got children of my own, so I have a number of tricks up my sleeve to get the best out of children of all ages and temperaments!

“I was really happy with the photoshoot with Georgina. With two small children, it wasn’t easy but she was very professional and the pictures look great.”

“I always struggle to get good pics of my 4 year old daughter but Georgina made it look so simple. She has a fantastic way with children and makes the shoot relaxed but fun. I was soooooo pleased to see the photos…”

Maria

“She was able to coax even the most camera-shy members of our family to relax and have fun, so the results are amazing.”
