What questions did my clients ask before booking me for their brand photoshoots?

Questions you should be asking before hiring a brand photographer to ensure you end up with exactly the right photos for your needs

Making sure you choose the right brand photographer for your business is really important.

It’s a Big Decision: capital B, capital D.

The images you capture will represent you, your business and how you connect with customers and clients across your website, your social channels, in your marketing materials and way, way beyond.  In my humble opinion, it is really important that you take the time to do your research and ask the right questions before you go all in.

Do you think your style fits in with my brand?

Every photographer has their own visual style. Some lean towards light and airy imagery, others favour moody and cinematic tones. Before you commit, make sure the photographer’s aesthetic fits in with your brand’s personality — the feel of the pictures needs to complement what it is you’re saying rather than clash with it.  Take the time to look at full galleries (not just highlights) so you can see consistency across a shoot.

What is your process/how do you work?

Understanding how your choice of photographer works will really help you to feel confident about the whole experience.  A phone or video call consultation to start the process is an excellent way to gauge whether your personalities align.  Find out if they include a site visit, if they recommend mood boards and if they help with shot planning.  Some photographers may help with logistics like location scouting and scheduling.  A clear process means fewer surprises and a much smoother shoot day.

What’s the timeline?

Timing is everything!  When you’re planning a launch, updating your website or refreshing your socials, if you’re got a deadline, make sure your photographer is able to meet it.  Check how long editing takes and when you’ll receive your final files. It may be that there is an additional charge for a super quick turnaround, so make sure you’re all on the same page about delivery.

What do you do to make clients feel at ease?

Creating brand photography is a partnership; a collaboration.  You need a photographer who makes you feel at ease, asks the right questions and helps you present your true self.  The pre-shoot consultation will help you start the process of getting to know each other; and when you are at ease in a photographers’ company, that is when the magic happens!

What’s included in the package?

Take the time to make sure that the package offered includes everything you need.  Does it cover a single location – or can you travel around?  How many hours will the shoot last?  Does that cover everything you need?  Will you need hi res imagery for print?  How many images will you receive?  Does the cost include editing?  What usage rights will you be granted?  Have a really good think about how, where and why you want to use the images and make sure you get all the answers you need!
