Gabrielle is an illustrator and modern calligrapher and runs her business Gabrielle Izen Design in Sevenoaks. She contacted me when she was in need of some shots that she could use for her website, as well as some imagery of her design work for use across her social channels, for marketing purposes and in her online shop.
Gabrielle gave me a really clear brief; she wanted pictures which told a story of her work and her business – easily showing her customers that all her designs are created by hand – and she wanted her headshots to illustrate her friendly and approachable personality.
Gabrielle designs from a home studio; a room in the eves of her house. Whilst the views are lovely, it is on the small side and wasn’t suitable for the light and airy shots we were hoping to achieve. I assessed the spaces available to us in the rest of the house and found a nice big window in the dining area.
In the dining room, we were able to spread out Gabrielle’s tools, paints and inks and I could get some really lovely natural shots of her drawing and illustrating. I find a great many clients feel uncomfortable in front of the camera at first and it is a great help for them to have something to hold, a chair to sit on or a wall to lean on whilst they relax into the session. The results were lovely, airy images that Gabrielle can use time and again.
What did Gabrielle have to say?
“I asked Georgina to take some photos of my work and also some portraits. I’m quite nervous in front of the camera, and as these images are for my business, I was doubly so. Georgina made me feel at ease from the outset and the photos not only look natural, they reflect the essence of what my work is about.”
