SPOTLIGHT ON…
West Kent Business Expo
2025
The West Kent Business Expo was held at the Riverside Centre in Tonbridge in March 2025. The event showcased and celebrated the diverse and thriving businesses of West Kent, providing attendees with a wealth of information on business support opportunities. Visitors had the chance to connect with local enterprises, explore new initiatives, and discover resources designed to help businesses grow and succeed.
Invest West Kent
The event formed part of the West Kent Business programme, which was managed by Invest West Kent — a collaborative initiative involving the three West Kent local authorities: Sevenoaks District Council, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. Through this collaboration, the Expo highlighted the region’s dynamic business community and reinforced the ongoing support available to local enterprises.
The Brief
I was absolutely delighted to be invited to capture the day at the West Kent Business Expo. The day began with a networking breakfast for local Chamber of Commerce members, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the day. This was followed by speeches from the organisers, celebrating the region’s vibrant business community and highlighting the support available to local enterprises.
My brief was broad but exciting: I was tasked with photographing the companies sponsoring the event, documenting the workshop presentations, and capturing the overall energy and atmosphere of the Expo. From candid moments of networking to the buzz of the exhibition floor, the goal was to convey the spirit of collaboration and celebration that defined the day.
The Challenge
Capturing the day wasn’t without its challenging moments. Catching genuine laughter on camera always requires patience; those perfect expressions often lasted only a split second! With so many people moving around, finding clear shots without too many distractions kept me on my toes. My peripheral vision is always on high alert at events like these! This means I am often able to catch the small, authentic moments that really tell the story of the day, even if I’m not looking directly at them!
Lighting is almost invariably a consideration. Here, the front of the hall benefitted from open doors letting in some natural light. However, the back of the hall was darker and moodier with the room’s artificial lights. Consequently, I was constantly adjusting to make sure each image was consistent.
I like to try and keep a gallery intersting! Thus I found myself thinking creatively about angles and perspectives throughout the day. I was trying to bring some artistry and depth to the photos. In the midst of the crowd, the key was always to keep observing, anticipate moments, and be ready to capture the energy and spirit of the Expo as it unfolded.
The Solution
Despite the challenges, the day offered plenty of fantastic opportunities to capture compelling images. From candid shots of attendees laughing and networking, to detailed images of the workshop presentations and sponsor stands. I was able to create a visual story that truly reflected the energy and atmosphere of the Expo. Balancing photography with the chance to connect and network myself made the experience even more enjoyable. I was not only behind the camera but also part of the buzz, meeting local business owners and soaking up the spirit of collaboration. By staying adaptable, keeping an eye out for genuine moments, and embracing the lively environment, I was able to deliver images that were both professional and full of character, perfectly capturing the essence of the day.
The next West Kent Business Expo is taking place on Wednesday 11th March 2026. Find out all about it here (and see some of my images in action!).
