What To Wear For Your Family Photoshoot
5 TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU PREPARE
When deciding what to wear for your family photo shoot, there are a few simple ideas which you can adopt to help make your final portraits beautiful and timeless – portraits that won’t date and you will adore looking at for years and years.
It can help to start with one key piece of clothing and then dress the rest of the family around that. So if a child has a favourite clothing item, or you have a particular outfit you love, use this as your starting point and work around that.
1. Think about where you want to display your portraits
Have a think about where you are going to display your portraits. You’re likely to want to hang them on the walls of your home for years to come, so the careful forethought you put into deciding what to wear – and the colour scheme you choose – for your shoot, will pay off for the many happy years your portraits are on display in your home.
2. Plan in Advance
Think through what you would like everyone to wear and plan in advance.
A great place to start when thinking through what to wear for your family photo shoot, is to choose a theme. So this could be smart, formal, casual or smart casual.
Within this theme, it’s a great idea to choose a couple of hues around which to develop your colour scheme. Use your brightest choice of colour sparingly and blend in the rest of your clothing choices accordingly.

3. Don’t be afraid of layers!
Layers are a great way to add visual interest; in Spring and Summer, a denim jacket, a shawl or a thin scarf can be added or taken away to change up the images.
In the autumn and winter, textured scarves, tights, blazers, jackets and cozy hats will keep you warm.
Dark colours can be slimming and a great choice. Therefore, it’s best to stay away from big, busy patterns which draw attention. However, gentle stripes, subtle spots or understated florals can look lovely.
4. Accessorise
But don’t feel the need to leave accessories at home! Boy children look so cute in braces or a flat cap! What little girl doesn’t love a floral headband! Earrings, necklaces, hats are all welcome. And if your child has a favourite (small) teddy – feel free to bring them along too!

5. Be comfortable
Arguably, the most important thing to remember is to wear what is comfortable and in which you feel at ease.
Little girls look lovely in a dress and boys scrub up nicely in a shirt – but if they aren’t comfortable on the day of your photo shoot they are unlikely to enjoy the experience and we want your pictures to reflect a happy time!
